The short answer

Rio is warm all year. The long-term averages show a hot, wetter summer from December to March and a cooler, drier winter from June to August, with July and August the driest months. If you want the mildest and driest conditions, those two months are the safest bet. If you want beach weather, summer is warmer but wetter.

No month guarantees a clear summit on your day. Cloud can sit on the top of the mountain in any season. What you can control is the time of day: mornings are calmer at the cable car. Plan your ride with our guide to Sugarloaf cable car tickets.

Highs and lows are monthly averages, not records. Rainfall is the average monthly total. December is the wettest month in this table, July and August the driest. Treat the numbers as a guide to the season, not as a forecast for your day.

The four seasons in practice

What the numbers mean for a Sugarloaf visit.

Summer, December to March

Highs of about 29 to 30 °C and lows above 22 °C. December has the highest rainfall of the year. Sunsets are late, around 18:25 to 18:40 in December. Expect heat on the open terraces, so take water and sun protection.

Autumn, April and May

April is still wet, with 137 mm in the table. By May the rain drops to 86 mm and the days cool to highs of about 26 °C.

Winter, June to August

The coolest and driest part of the year. Highs of about 25 °C, lows below 19 °C and the least rain in July and August. Sunset comes early, about 17:14 to 17:18 in June, so you will be on the summit in the late afternoon.

Spring, September to November

Temperatures climb again from 25 to 27 °C, and rainfall stays moderate until December.

Best time of day

The cable car runs from 08:30 on weekdays and from 07:30 on Saturday and Sunday until 21:00, with the last ride up at 19:30. Mornings are calmer. Between 15:00 and 18:00 demand is higher and queues at boarding are possible, even with a booked time slot.

Sunset is the most popular time. Sunset times are a range, not a fixed minute: about 17:14 to 17:18 in June and about 18:25 to 18:40 in December. Hills and clouds change what you actually see from the top. Our Sugarloaf sunset guide explains where to stand.

Rain does not automatically close the cable car. In bad conditions the ride can be interrupted. A booked ticket can be rebooked once for free until the start time, depending on availability.
