Sugarloaf at sunset: what to plan
Sunset from the cable car is a popular plan, and the late afternoon is also when the park is busiest. Two things decide how it goes: when the sun goes down on your date, and how early you go up.
In June 2026, sunset in Rio falls at about 17:14 to 17:18 local time. In December 2026 it falls at about 18:25 to 18:40. Those are city values. The hills in front of you, the clouds and your exact viewpoint change what you see from the summit, so treat the times as a planning range and not as exact minutes.

Choosing your time slot
You book a date and a time window, and the window applies to boarding. Demand is higher from 15:00 to 18:00, with possible queues at the stations. A booked slot does not remove every wait.
After boarding you can stay until the park closes at 21:00. You cannot re-enter with the same ticket once you leave. Slots on Friday and Saturday at 15:00, 16:00 and 17:00 cost more: the full price is BRL 205, and BRL 230 in those three slots (2026). Prices for reduced categories are in the Sugarloaf cable car tickets guide.
The ride has two legs, with a change at Morro da Urca. Add time for that change. In June, with sunset near 17:15, a 15:00 or 16:00 slot puts you on the summit before the light turns. In December, with sunset near 18:30, a 16:00 or 17:00 slot gives you the same margin.

Where to stand
Morro da Urca and the Sugarloaf summit both look out over the Bay of Botafogo and Guanabara Bay. No single terrace is the best one all year. The sun sets in a different part of the sky across the seasons, so walk around once on arrival, look where the light is heading and settle there.
The cable car lines run through the foreground in many evening photos. They add a shape to the sky, and you can use them to frame the view. From Sugarloaf you also see Botafogo and the Corcovado hill, where the Christ statue stands. For the statue itself, see Christ the Redeemer.

If the weather turns
Rain does not automatically close the cable car. In bad conditions the operator can pause the service. If you are already on a ride when that happens, customer service handles it case by case. You can rebook once for free until your booked start time, subject to availability.
Clouds can sit on the summit, and nobody can promise a clear sky on your evening. If you have flexibility, book the slot a day or two into your stay and keep a spare evening. The best time to visit Rio page covers the seasons.

The way back after dark
Plan it before you go up.
Staying late
The park stays open until 21:00. The last ride up is at 19:30, so you can watch the blue hour from the top and still ride down in the evening.
Getting home
The cable car station is at Avenida Pasteur 520 in Urca. Metro, bus, taxi and ride-app options are in our guide to getting to Sugarloaf. If you are unsure about the late bus, use a taxi or a ride app.
Care after dark
Take more care after dark in Rio and avoid walking on the beach at night. Keep your phone and valuables out of sight on the way back. More on this under is Rio safe.
Sunset without the cable car
The Mureta da Urca is a seawall on Rua Cândido Gaffree, a meeting place with a view over the bay. People go there to watch the sun set. It is a different view from the mountain: you look across the water with the shoreline in front of you. Read more in the Urca guide.
The Morro da Urca trail also ends at the middle station. If you walk up, remember that the ride down is not free. Costs are in the hiking guide.

Sugarloaf sunset: frequently asked questions
What time is sunset at Sugarloaf?
It depends on the month. In June 2026 it is about 17:14 to 17:18, and in December 2026 about 18:25 to 18:40. These are city times, so use them as a range.
Is this the official Sugarloaf website?
No. This is an independent guide, not connected to the cable car operator, the city, Riotur or Visit Rio. Check hours and prices on your booking page before you go.
Do I need to book a sunset slot in advance?
Booking online is the safer plan. At the ticket office you can buy only if places are free, and a slot that is sold out online has no counter quota.
What is the last ride up the mountain?
The last ride up is at 19:30 and the park closes at 21:00. Boarding follows your booked time window.
Does rain cancel the cable car?
Not automatically. The operator can pause service in bad conditions. You can rebook once for free until the booked start, subject to availability.
