Choosing a base in Rio

Four areas make sense if Sugarloaf is part of your trip: Urca, Botafogo, Flamengo and Copacabana. The cable car station is in Urca, on Avenida Pasteur, next to Praia Vermelha. Botafogo is the metro stop where most public routes to Urca begin. Flamengo sits on the same metro line. Copacabana is the beach base, with its own metro stations.

None of these areas is clearly better for everyone. The right one depends on whether you want to walk to the cable car, travel by metro, or stay by the beach and join tours with pickup. If you prefer a day trip with transfer, see our Sugarloaf tours and check the pickup area for each.

The four areas in detail

What each one means for a Sugarloaf trip.

Urca

The district at the foot of the mountain. The cable car station on Avenida Pasteur and Praia Vermelha are here, so you can start early without a transfer. There is also the seawall, the Mureta da Urca, for evenings. Check rates and availability on the booking site you use.

Urca guide →

Botafogo

The metro station is the link to Urca. From exit E, Mena Barreto, you walk to the bus terminus on Rua Voluntários da Pátria and take bus 513 to UNIRIO, then walk 260 m. That makes Botafogo practical if you want to combine the metro with a transfer to Sugarloaf.

Getting there →

Flamengo

Flamengo has its own station on metro line 1, like Botafogo and Glória. It gives you metro access but not the same walking distance to Sugarloaf. Plan the change at Botafogo.

Copacabana

Copacabana has the stations Cardeal Arcoverde, Siqueira Campos and Cantagalo. Several tours pick up at selected hotels there. The beaches, the districts and the hotel choice are covered in the sister guide to where to stay in Rio.

What to check before you book

Location is only one part of the decision. These points are worth checking on any booking page.

  • Tour pickup: city tours and day trips pick up at selected hotels in Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon and São Conrado, and some in Barra. For Urca, Botafogo and Flamengo, ask the operator before you book.
  • Early start: the cable car opens at 08:30 on weekdays and 07:30 on Saturday and Sunday, and mornings are calmer. Staying close makes an early ride easier.
  • Evening plans: the last ride up leaves at 19:30. If you plan to see sunset on the summit, count the return trip into your evening.
  • Walking at night: take extra care after dark, wherever you stay. Do not walk on the beach at night.
