Sugarloaf cable car tickets 2026 at a glance
The cable car runs in two legs. The first goes from Praia Vermelha to Morro da Urca at 220 m, the second from there to the summit at 396 m. You come down the same way. One ticket covers the whole round trip. A regular adult ticket costs BRL 205 as of October 2026. On Fridays and Saturdays in the 3 p.m., 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. windows the adult price is BRL 230.
When you buy online you choose a date and a time window. The window applies to boarding. After that you can stay until closing, but a ticket does not let you back in once you have left.

Our picks: cable car tickets
Both tickets take you to Morro da Urca and on to the summit: the first is the official entry for a free day on the mountain, the second also covers the whole park. The sunrise visit is for anyone who wants to be on the summit before it opens, with breakfast and a hotel transfer.

Free entry for small children needs proof of age. The free limit is 2 years and 11 months, not under 6. For reduced tickets bring a photo ID, proof of age, a disability certificate or proof of residence, depending on the category. Students in Brazil, holders of the ID Jovem card aged 15 to 29 and certain education staff from Rio also have reduced options. Do not count on a foreign student card being accepted.
For most visitors from abroad, the adult ticket at BRL 205 for a weekday morning window is the simplest choice. It avoids the peak price and the busiest hours.
Hours, queues and the best time to go
The cable car runs from 08:30 to 21:00 Monday to Friday and from 07:30 to 21:00 on Saturday and Sunday. The last ride up is at 19:30. There is no weekly closing day. Closing is at 21:00, so plan your descent well before that.
- Mornings are quieter. Fewer people arrive then.
- 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. is busiest. Demand is higher and there can be a queue to board.
- A booked window helps, but it does not remove every wait. You still queue for the cabin within your window.
The panoramic cabins have transparent sides and take up to 65 people. Each leg takes about 3 to 4 minutes without a queue. If you want the evening light, read the sunset page before you pick a window.
Buying your ticket
Online or at the ticket office, and what Fast Access adds.
Online
Choose the date and window, and you hold a ticket for that entry. This is the safest way to get a seat in the afternoon.
At the ticket office
Possible only while seats are free. If the window is sold out online, the ticket office has no extra seats for it. It takes cash in BRL, PIX and credit and debit cards.
Fast Access
An option with priority queues at all stations and a lounge at Praia Vermelha. The price depends on the date and time. It covers one round trip on the same day, with one ride per leg.
Walking up
The trail reaches Morro da Urca only. The ride down from there is a separate ticket, BRL 65, or BRL 32 reduced. Adding the summit and the ride back costs BRL 140, or BRL 70 reduced.
Hike guide βWeather and entrance rules
Rain does not close the cable car by itself. In bad weather the operation can be interrupted. If your ride is affected, the operator handles it case by case through customer service. Views can be poor in cloud, and no ticket guarantees a clear day.
At the entrance these rules apply:
- No drones and no glass containers.
- No items larger than 25 Γ 35 Γ 55 cm.
- Under 16 only with a parent or a responsible adult.
- No entry barefoot, in swimwear or without a shirt.
- Do not approach or feed the animals.
Most visitors also want to see the second mountain on the way, so read about Morro da Urca. Directions are on the getting there page. If you also plan to visit the statue on Corcovado, see the Christ the Redeemer tickets and the combination trips that put both on one day.
